Its incredible how an invention from earlier than 1900 has remained so pure but at the same time it has evolved so much. Exactly, I'm talking about the radio! The purpose of the radio has always been the same: sharing. It was in 1900 when their inventors wanted to share information from great distances, and it is still the same purpose today, where millions of people listen to the radio looking for information or entertainment. But we are not here to talk about the radio. We are here to talk about its most contemporary update: the podcast.
I'm sure you know what a podcast is, but I can explain it anyways. A podcast is basically a way to broadcast deferred. You first record your audio, you can edit it, and then you publish it. There are tons of platforms to upload these files, and the same happens with programs to record and edit them. And guess what, this is a fantastic way to approach a lesson.
Podcasts are easy to prepare and they don't require much technical knowledge. Primary school students can easily prepare one with some scaffolding. In them, they can talk about any topic, and this means that any subject can include them in their plan. Even a radio program with different sections would be possible to do in a school, which will be a transversal and very productive activity. In fact, I've created one activity for the English language subject. Students will have to create their own radio program by making different podcasts. As an example, the explanation of the project comes in form of podcast. Here you can take a look:
How have I done it? Well, that was easy.
- I first decided what platform I would use to upload my podcast. Soundcloud was the chosen one because it gives the possibility of creating groups, so it would be easier for students to share their podcasts. However, there are many more with different values such as Ivoox, Anchor, Podomatic, or Spreaker.
- Then I prepared a script. This step is quite important because it helps you get your ideas clear. You don't always need to write everything, but is important to prepare at least a scheme of what you want to say. You can check my script here or at the end of the post.
- What I did next was to choose an app and record myself. I used my mobile phone, but you can easily find many useful apps on the Internet.
- Finally, I edited it adding some sounds and effects with a free license in Audacity. You can find them on Youtube or web pages like FreeMusicArchive, ZapSplat, or FreeSoundsLibrary.
- The last step is just uploading it and share it with whoever you want to.
